Austin Area Speech & Language Services is a private practice serving a variety of populations with articulation, language, fluency, voice and oral-motor difficulties. All of our providers hold  Masters degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders and are "certified clinically competent" by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association.

Susanne DeJernett, owner of Austin Area Speech and Language Services, has lived in Austin intermittently since 1984. She received her Masters degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Texas at Austin in 1996. She has worked in a variety of settings in the field of Speech Pathology including: The Veteran’s Hospital in Temple, Texas; Transitional Learning Community, a post-acute traumatic brain injury facility; The Montreal Fluency Centre and other private practices in Austin. Her specific areas of interest within the field of Speech-Language Pathology include articulation, oral-motor deficits, language disorders, traumatic brain injury, accent reduction and fluency. Susanne has completed the three day PROMPT training and looks forward to attaining a higher level of proficiency in this unique and highly effective treatment tool.

Julie Niedert received her Bachelor of Science degree (with Cum Laude honors) in 1997 and her Master of Science degree in 2002.  Julie has been practicing in the field of Speech-Language Pathology for over eight years in the Austin area.  Julie holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from American Speech & Hearing Association (ASHA).  Julie has practiced both in public schools and private practice, working primarily with preschool and school-aged children.  Her professional interests are varied, excelling in articulation, oral motor, language, auditory processing, and developmental delays.  Julie is recently married, enjoys the outdoors, traveling, and the arts.

Michaela van der Westhuizen received her Bachelor of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2008 and her Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 2012. Michaela holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and has practiced in Leander public schools before joining Austin Area Speech & Language Services. She enjoys working with preschool and school-aged children who have difficulties with articulation, language, fluency of speech, and developmental delays and disabilities. She also has experience working with children diagnosed with Autism. Michaela has lived in the Austin area for 2 years, is an avid runner, and enjoys all of the outdoor activities that Austin has to offer. Michaela has completed the three day PROMPT training and looks forward to attaining a higher level of proficiency in this unique and highly effective treatment tool.

Shay Eastham-Perry, MCD, CCC-SLP completed undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University and  a Master of Science Degree in Communication Disorders from University of Texas Dallas.  Shay holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence from American Speech, Language and Hearing Association; certification for Assistive Technology; and, Administrative Certification in Education. She has taught Early Childhood Language and Communication at North Texas State University, Southern Methodist University, and Mt. San Jacinto Community College.  Shay has had licenses and practiced in North Carolina, South Carolina, California, Arizona and Texas.  Her area of interest and expertise is early childhood speech and language intervention/remediation with birth through adolescence including Augmentative Communication; Picture Exchange Communication (PECs); sign language paired with oral communication for the purpose of development of oral speech; phonological processing/articulation; fluency; auditory processing; language development as related to cochlear implants;  and receptive/expressive language development.  Shay recently moved to Austin from California and enjoys outdoor activities, music, pets, and gardening.

Wendy Stickley graduated from Oklahoma State University with a M.A. in Speech Language Pathology in 1995. She enjoys working with children birth to 8 years of age focusing on language, oral motor skills, and articulation delays. She has had the opportunity to work with variety of children diagnosed with PDD or Autism as well as those with hearing loss and verbal Apraxia. Wendy continues to obtain training related to Autism as well as other areas of interest.

Carl Louise Brown is making random visits to Austin Area Speech and Language Therapy Services to help out where he can. His areas of expertise include focused attention, willingness to participate and listening skills. Although he still has work to do, we look forward to seeing more of him around the office as his skills improve. Carl Louise is big but very gentle.

Buddy Marie was suddenly taken from us in July of 2008. He is now wherever dogs go, where Susanne's Dad is undoubtedly making him dog-sized pancakes and letting him lick the breakfast dishes. Rest in peace dear furry therapy helper.
