About Us

Austin Area Speech & Language Services is a private practice serving a variety of populations with articulation, language, fluency, voice and oral-motor difficulties. All of our providers hold  Masters degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders and are “certified clinically competent” by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association.

Susanne DeJernett, owner of Austin Area Speech and Language Services, has lived in Austin intermittently since 1984. She received her Masters degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Texas at Austin in 1996. She has worked in a variety of settings in the field of Speech Pathology including: The Veteran’s Hospital in Temple, Texas; Transitional Learning Community, a post-acute traumatic brain injury facility; The Montreal Fluency Centre and other private practices in Austin. Her specific areas of interest within the field of Speech-Language Pathology include articulation, oral-motor deficits, language disorders, traumatic brain injury, accent reduction and fluency. Susanne has completed the three day PROMPT training and looks forward to attaining a higher level of proficiency in this unique and highly effective treatment tool.

Susanne has also completed level one of Basic Language Skills at the Rawson-Saunders Institute. This Orton-Gillingham- based program is designed to teach reading skills in an explicit manner to those who face challenges learning to read.

Julie Niedert received her Bachelor of Science degree (with Cum Laude honors) in 1997 and her Master of Science degree in 2002.  Julie has been practicing in the field of Speech-Language Pathology for over ten years in the Austin area.  Julie holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from American Speech & Hearing Association (ASHA).  Julie has practiced both in public schools and private practice, working primarily with preschool and school-aged children.  Her professional interests are varied, excelling in articulation, oral motor, language, auditory processing, and developmental delays.  Julie is married, and has recently become a mother to a lovely baby girl. She enjoys the outdoors, traveling, and the arts.

Holly Leoni received her Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology from The
University of Texas at Austin and her Masters from Texas Woman’s
University. She is a licensed speech pathologist in the State of Texas and
holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American
Speech-Language Hearing Association. Holly is also a licensed Hanen ®
provider, with certifications in the parent programs It Takes Two to Talk,
More than Words®, and Learning Language and Loving It™. Holly has worked
in pediatric private practice since 2002 and enjoys all areas of speech
and language development. Holly lives in Southwest Austin with her husband
and two children.

Mariel Phillips received her Bachelor of Art in Speech Pathology from the
University of Maryland and her Masters from Hofstra University in New
York. She has experience in both private and public educational settings. She is a
licensed speech pathologist in the state of Maryland and Texas and she
holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American
Speech-Language Hearing Association. She has practiced in public schools
and private practice for 10 years. Mariel is skilled in the assessment and
treatment of children ages 3 through 18 with various diagnoses including;
articulation/phonological disorders, auditory processing disorders,
receptive/expressive language delays, autism spectrum disorders, and Downs
Syndrome. Mariel also has extensive experience working with children with
social skills deficits both individually and in group settings. She just
moved to Austin and is excited to join the Austin Area speech team and exploring Austin.
